What this is
A stock-market treemap applied to a materiel position. Every rectangle is a line item, whether 155 mm, 7.62, or a Black Hawk, grouped into fourteen commodity categories. Size is how much is held. Color is how long it has been sitting.
The position on screen is synthetic and was written for this demonstration. Quantities, ages, consumption rates, requirements and unit costs are invented and order-of-magnitude plausible; nomenclature is public reference. The mechanism is real, the numbers are not.
What you're looking at
- Tile area: quantity on hand. Log-compressed by default, because the position spans five orders of magnitude: 48 million rounds of 5.56 against 18 directed-energy effectors is 2.7 million to one, and drawn linearly the small-caliber block eats three-quarters of the canvas and sixty-six of the hundred and seventeen line items never appear. The compression preserves rank order exactly; it only narrows the ratio.
- Tile color: days sitting. 0 to 30 fresh · 30 to 90 current · 90 to 180 ageing · 180 days and over, stale.
- Category boxes hold a floor share of the canvas, 55% split evenly and 45% by size, so a category with seven airframes stays as readable as one with nine vehicles. The largest is still the largest, at about 2.5:1 rather than 12:1.
- The right rail is the same story in numbers. Share of inventory value sitting ninety days or more, dollars past a hundred and eighty, then every category ranked worst-first with its value-weighted average age. Value-weighted deliberately: a pile of cheap fast-moving stock should not disguise expensive stock that has not moved.
- Every figure is on the tile. Quantity, days sitting, and, under the coverage lens, days of supply against that line's own requirement. Hover or tab to any tile for the full card, including how it scores under the other lens.
Try this
- Set Tile size to Aged capital ($, sitting 90d+). The map collapses to only the money that is not moving; anything under ninety days disappears. Sharpest single view in the file.
- Switch Tile color to Days of supply vs. requirement. Same position, opposite question: ageing shows what is not moving, coverage shows what you will run out of. The whole rail follows the lens, headline and all.
- Click any category header to drill into it, then All categories or Esc to come back.
- Set Tile size to Quantity, linear to see exactly why log is the default.
- Hit Full screen. The chrome collapses and the map takes the display.
- Load your own position. Any CSV or XLSX with an item name and a quantity column will render. Header matching is alias-tolerant, and age accepts either a day count or a receipt date. Parsing happens in this browser tab; nothing is uploaded, stored, or transmitted.
Method
- Days sitting is time on the shelf without movement, supplied directly or computed from a receipt date.
- Days of supply = quantity on hand ÷ planned daily consumption. Coverage = days of supply ÷ that line's own required days of supply, so a helicopter and a 5.56 round are judged against their own standard rather than one global threshold. Coverage bands: critical <25%, serious 25 to 60%, warning 60 to 100%, sustained ≥100%.
- Category coverage is capped at 100% per line item before rolling up, so a surplus of 12-gauge cannot mask a shortfall of Stingers.
- Nothing is hidden. Any line item too small to draw at the current scale is counted in the legend, and every tile carries its name even where it has to be clipped. The full position is always available in Table view.
- Color never carries meaning alone. Red and green are not separable under deuteranopia, so every band also ships a text label, a numeric figure on the tile, an optional ordered hatch, and a Mono single-hue ramp that is readable without color vision. Label contrast is measured, not estimated, and every tile clears 4.8:1.
On your engagement
This is the read, not a system of record. On an engagement the same map runs against your own extract, whether ERP, WMS, or a hand-built sheet, through the identical code path as the upload button above. What changes is the data, not the tool.
The questions it is built to settle in one frame: where is capital sitting, which commodity classes are turning and which are not, and what would it cost to move to a defensible position. Where a line is both stale and short, that is the worst quadrant and the map shows it in a single glance.
